Assignment 1–Cardboard Chair

Anthropometric Research

Anthropometry is the measurement of people and the analysis of the results for various purposes. Anthropometry was originally a kind of physical anthropology methodology used to compare the population, but since the 1950 s, the project is to obtain the purpose of anthropometry, analysis and application of human body size (and more general body measurements), in order to design and evaluate the products, tools, work space, and people to interact with the other artifacts. The university of Michigan transportation research institute (UMTRI) has a long history of conducting widely used anthropometric research, including the most widely used study of children and adult motor vehicle users in the United States.

In the UK, more than 60 per cent of adults are overweight/obese or classified as' extra large '. As the incidence of supersizing has risen, so have the demographics of the working population.

Types of Chairs
According to material classification:
solid wood chair, glass chair, iron chair, plastic chair, cloth chair, leather chair, foam chair.

Classification by use:
office chair, dining chair, bar chair, leisure chair, lounge chair, special chair, etc.

Massage Chair

The principle of massage chair is to imitate manual massage, but it is to use mechanical rolling power and mechanical force to squeeze to massage. Massage chair can use according to human body curve along the spine sway, finger pressure, hold, push and knead a variety of massage techniques for deep massage. When people sit in a massage chair and enjoy total relaxation, it is as if someone is pounding their back or shoulders for them.

Rocking Chair

Rocking chair. Rocking chair, which literally means rocking chair. One can lie half on it, gently rocking with the chair, and that feeling is very comfortable. Especially in the winter afternoon, the sun is warm, after dinner to rest in the rocking chair, too comfortable

Example of Cardboard Chairs

It's great to make some chairs with cardboard, which not only exercises our practical ability, but also promotes our thinking about space. At the same time, it's also a very environmentally
friendly behavior. I hope you can use your waste cardboard to do more meaningful things.

Week1

In the first week we practiced making a bridge, table with cardboard and so on and this was the first time we use cardboard to make something that would give us some experience and inspiration for the chairs that we would later make and then we practiced using paper to make a chair.

When we were making paper chairs, my friends and I found that it was not an easy thing to do. We did try a lot of things, failed and wasted a lot of paper. Finally, I managed to make two relatively easy paper chairs. So we need to put more effort in this project!

During this time I learned a variety of ways to hold the cardboard together (without glue or tape).

Exploring different styles of cardboard techniques

Sketching Chairs:
I started thinking from multiple angles of the basis chair for my first sketch.

In the last two sketching,I thought about a lot of different shapes chairs and different materials chairs as the source of my inspiration.

Week2
In this week , I saw the lecture it covers some economics in other words human factors.

Ergonomics is also known as human factors. It’s the way of disciplined scientific study that helps us to study and understand the human interactions with the products, equipment, environment and systems.

Every year, companies around the world spend hundreds of millions of dollars on ergonomic chairs, keyboards and consultants, believing they are taking science-backed steps to care for their workers.

Ergonomists are regularly called as expert witnesses in court, where their findings can decide workplace injury claims worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ergonomics is promoted by work safety organisations around the country.(Liam Mannix 2018)

Week3
Chair ideation sketches:

The first two sketching were drawn from some life experiences that I observed around me,which suitable for home and office use.

Functional chairs: Here are some multifunctional chairs that can be folded up or taken apart to make something else(maybe table...).

High chairs: I've drawn many kinds of tall chairs, in different shapes for different occasions. Just like there are some tall chairs for offices use and there are some tall chairs for bars use names bar stool.

Interesting Chairs: The last one sketching is some chairs that I think are interesting looking, they have all sorts of shapes. Some like trees one-piece chair, movable chair and geometric chair and chair that look like sika deer.

Week4
This week begin researching the five chairs concept and make five chairs models.
This week's exercise has made us more aware that different chairs use different ways and learn how to measure the size of the chair and the length of the chair and so on.

This is the first little chair that I made and it looks very simple,I  love the simple style  (it's kind of like ikea style?)but it shouldn't be my final because it wouldn't be strong enough if I made it out of cardboard.

This chair looks a little bit more complicated and I put the cardboard together in a way that I plug -in and this chair with armrests and shading is a very modern chair.

For this, it's more like a stool than a chair It looks like a box looks strong and its side pattern looks like a flower.

This bench is the kind you find in parks

This chair is going to be my final, I've made a lot of them and I've improved them to make them look more stable.
process

Here are some of the pictures that I did while I was making these little chairs. After using many methods, it was not easy to finish. And there were a lot of crumbs on the table that needed to be cleaned.

Week5
This week, my friend(huey yee) and I went to the workshop to get the huge cardboard. First, we went to the fee center of the library and paid 18 dollars. Then we two girls spent a lot of effort to move it from the workshop to the studio. hahah~
This is the huge cardboard, but this is what I cut out. The original one is a lot bigger than this.

Week6
On the basis of the small chair I made in the third week, I made an improvement, because I think adding a piece of cardboard to the side to fix it does not look very beautiful. Again, the following two types are what I want to improve.
The first way is to just put a board on top of the front triangle and just form a plane to sit on.The second method is to add a triangle of the same size in the middle to make it more stable. The first method is to insert the cardboard into the back and the second method is to insert the cardboard into the bottom.
This is the insert method and process.
The process of making a full-size cardboard chairs

  • Begin making 1:1 cardboard chair in studio
This is the first day that we went to studio to do our project and my friend and I didn't start cutting out that huge piece of cardboard but just made some measurements and refined some previous mistakes. Don't think of measuring and marking as easy work. We come in after dinner and work until after two am in the morning.
I had a hard time measuring at first because I only had a 30-centimeter ruler and a 15-centimeter steel ruler. Then one of my classmates said he couldn't use his ruler and lent it to me. His ruler was very long very suitable for measuring this large piece of cardboard. I was very grateful to him. This made my progress a lot faster.

  • Cutting out
According to the measurement of the previous day, I directly cut out the pattern I wanted.

However, this cardboard was too thick for me and my friends. I was very difficult to cut out the first triangle. Because I'm inserting it into the bottom, it takes a lot of effort to get it to merge with the bottom.

The picture above is what I did when I made the first triangle. The picture in the middle was taken after I successfully inserted it into the bottom
And then I did the same thing for the second triangle and it was still a hard process but I think it looked pretty good with my lots of efforts.

Today, when we are finished, we start at 10 PM and finish at around 3 am
09/09/2019 -Monday
  • Making and finished my final chair
This day is going to be a lot faster because I've already laid the groundwork for the first two days and then I'm just going to put together what I cut the day before. This looks almost there. All I need to do is make an opening in the middle of the front triangle and just squeeze the cardboard in

This is my friend's shot of me trying very hard to make my own chair(try to fit it in).
Finally!!!!

Week7
Conclusion
At last, I finished this chair of my own, which made me very happy. However, during this period, I kept reflecting on whether I was at fault or not. Did you learn more by making this chair? During this time, I learned how to use paper to fold some objects and learned the background and history of many chairs. And it made me understand more and more how a good chair is formed because it's not an easy thing to do. It also made me understand that I have to go through numerous attempts before making my final work. And there is friendship and mutual help between students which I mentioned earlier.

However, during the production process, my friend and I received the news that Anna would extend the time of our project by one week, which was a good news But we didn't stop and it took us three days to finish our chair. It was a difficult task but we also found a lot of fun in it and we celebrated it together when it was finished.

The last thing is to finish the last A3 board or A3 piece of paper.
A3 board to pin up on the day of presentation.

Week8–Due day

This week is the last week and the first project is finally coming to the end. On this day, we are going to give a short presentation. This is an important test for me, because It is the first time I have a presentation at school. So I was very nervous. I watched the video given by the teacher and wrote down the main points of the  presentation. I wish my presentation got a great success.
